Buying a Home in Dearborn, Michigan: What Buyers Should Know

Dearborn, Michigan continues to be one of the most recognizable names in Metro Detroit. If you are thinking about buying here, these are the things I walk every buyer through before we tour a single home.
Get your financing in order first
Talk to a lender and get pre-approved before you start looking. A pre-approval tells you what you can comfortably spend, and it shows sellers you are ready to move when the right home comes along.
Know the housing stock
Dearborn has a wide range of homes, from early twentieth-century houses like those in the Ford Homes Historic District to brick ranches and newer builds. Older homes often have real character, but they can also come with aging systems. Budget for a thorough inspection and ask about the roof, the furnace and the electrical service.
Look past the list price
In Michigan, a home’s taxable value uncaps when it sells, so your property taxes may be higher than what the current owner pays. Ask me for an estimate based on the home you are considering, and check whether you will qualify for the principal residence exemption.
Drive the area at different times of day and test your commute before you commit.
Be ready to act
When a well-priced home comes on the market, it may not last long. I will show you what comparable homes have actually sold for, so you can write a strong offer with confidence and without overpaying.
Let’s make a plan
Every buyer’s situation is different. If you are considering a move to Dearborn, call or text me and we will put a plan together around your budget and timeline.
